Abstract

Antecedentes: El estrés calórico compromete la capacidad de adaptación, el bienestar y la productividad de los búfalos de agua. Su susceptibilidad se relaciona con particularidades anatómicas y fisiológicas que limitan la disipación de calor, lo cual es especialmente relevante en sistemas tropicales. En Cuba se registraron valores del índice temperatura-humedad (ITH) entre 75 y 89, superiores a los intervalos de confort descritos para la especie. Objetivo. Analizar las respuestas fisiológicas y hematológicas de los búfalos ante el estrés calórico, evaluar los principales indicadores utilizados para su identificación y examinar las estrategias de mitigación con mayor respaldo experimental. Desarrollo: Los límites de ITH variaron entre estudios: se propusieron 68–72 para estrés leve, 73–76 para estrés moderado y ≥77 para estrés severo, mientras que otra clasificación delimitó ausencia de estrés entre 56,71–73,21, estrés moderado entre 73,22–75,39; severo entre 75,40–80,27 y crítico a partir de 80,27. La frecuencia respiratoria constituyó uno de los indicadores más sensibles: la exposición solar directa elevó sus valores a 35,63 vs. 25,64 resp/min en animales con sombra. Los sistemas de aspersión y ventilación redujeron la frecuencia respiratoria a 22,83 vs. 30,83 resp/min y la frecuencia cardíaca a 38,36 vs. 60,19 latidos/min. En búfalas Murrah, la estación cálida incrementó los neutrófilos a 42,5 % vs. 35,8 % y redujo los linfocitos a 52,3 % vs. 59,6 %, con aumento de la relación neutrófilos/linfocitos. Conclusiones: La interpretación conjunta del ITH, la frecuencia respiratoria, la frecuencia cardíaca, la temperatura rectal y los indicadores hematológicos permitió valorar con mayor precisión la respuesta al calor. La sombra, el enfriamiento activo, el acceso al agua y el ajuste del manejo redujeron la carga fisiológica asociada al estrés calórico.
